Should I bring my own snacks or beverages? What entertainment facilities do you have available? Can I eat before my appointment? This is a common concern of patients. You are encouraged to maintain a normal meal schedule, please DO NOT skip a meal before a treatment. However you may find it is best to have a light meal and avoid any fatty/fried, spicy or acidic foods. Is there anything I NEED to bring?
Things that you may find helpful on your treatment day are:
How long should I expect to be there? This is difficult to generalize, as the length of your infusion will vary greatly depending on the type of treatment you will receive. After you arrive you will need time to receive any premeditations such as antinausea medication. Due to the expensive cost of most chemotherapy medication it is necessary for our nursing staff to prepare them after you have arrived for your appointment. After you have received your first treatment our nursing staff will be able to give you a more accurate prediction of length of time so you will be able to plan future visits.
Should I organize transportation? For your first treatment you do need to organize transportation. Due to the difficulty of predicting how long your treatment will last it is not possible to pre-arrange a time to pick you up. If your diver is not staying with you during your treatment we will be happy to give them a call 30 minutes before you are discharged from the infusion center. Can my family come with me?We do encourage you to have the support of a family member or close friend while receiving your treatment. However, even though we have just moved to a new, modern, large facility we still have the constraints of space. We do only allow 2-3 visitors to accompany you into the infusion center. What entertainment facilities do you have available? Our infusion center has DVD player, board games and puzzles available for you during your treatment. Our private rooms are also equipped with cable TV's which do have DVD facilities.
