CPMC Cancer Symposium 11/4/09
Drs. Medgyesy and Moore recently travelled to Fort Morgan to take part in the fourth annual Colorado Plains Medical Center Cancer Symposium. To a lively crowd of over 50 participants, they educated the public on advances in many solid cancers, and encouraged people to keep up to date on cancer screening. This event was well received, and we look forward to participating next year!
This event was reported by SANDY ENGLE, Special to The Times, in her article Medical pros discuss cancer at symposium (read full article>). The article says that Dr Medgyesy's presentation was tailored towards breast cancer stating that it is due to the complexity of the cell make-up is the reason it difficult to have one treatment that treats all cases of cancer.
She continues to say that in the past when women received similar treatment for breast cancer some patients were being over treated by receiving treatment that did not benefit their situation. Now with targeted therapies that attach individual cancer cells, instead of all cells, are being performed in breast cancer research. Factors such as genetic markers, tumor size, age of patient and how quickly cells divide have a role in the type of therapy undertaken by a breast cancer patient.
Two clinical trials are currently under way testing the effectiveness of chemotherapy in combination with forms of other treatment, as well as an in-depth look at Tamoxifen, a hormone therapy that has been on the market for a number of years and that has traditionally worked well in some patients.
Dr. James Moore showed how there is more hope in the field by sharing success stories and statistics of survival rates that have doubled or tripled for some kinds of cancers. This in conjunction with the number of available treatment options increasing over the past decade provides a new era of hope.
This event was well received, and Front Range Cancer Specialists look forward to participating next year!
