Sutent sunitinib malate)
- Sutent is an oral drug used to treat either gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) or patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma.
- Sutent is taken in 6-week cycles. Here are instructions on how to take your Sutent:
- Take Sutent every day for the first 4 weeks (days 1 to 28) of each cycle.
- Stop taking Sutent for the next 2 weeks (days 29-42) to complete the cycle.
- Then the next 6-week cycle begins and you repeat the above pattern.
- You may take Sutent with or without food
- Some of the side effects may include:
- Diarrhea
- Nausea/upset stomach/vomiting
- You will be given prescriptions to use at home for any troubles with nausea.
- mouth sores
- fatigue
- skin changes
- Heart problems. Tell your doctor if you feel very tired, are short of breath, or have swollen feet and ankles.
- Bleeding. Sutent may cause a hole in your stomach or bowel wall or bleeding from the tumor. Tell your doctor if you experience painful, swollen abdomen, vomiting blood, or black, sticky stools.
- High blood Pressure.
- You will be monitored and may need treatment for high blood pressure.
Sutent may interact with other treatments or products. Tell your doctor or nurse about each medicine, vitamin, or herbal product that you use.
