Chemotherapy Education

Nipent
(Pentostatin)

  • Given intravenously
  • Some of the side effects may include:
  1. Myelosuppression/Bone Marrow Suppression
    • Your red blood cell (RBC), white blood cell (WBC), and platelet counts will all drop after Nipent, reaching their lowest point (nadir) about 2 weeks after chemo.
    • This makes you more prone to anemia, infection, and bleeding.
    • All counts will recover by themselves. No specific diet or activity will hasten this.
    • Blood counts will be checked at least once each week and more frequently if ordered by your physician.
  2. Nausea and vomiting
    • May be mild to severe.
    • You will be given anti-nausea medication prior to treatment, and you will receive prescriptions for home.
  3. Pulmonary changes
    • Increased effects of bronchitis, upper respiratory infection, cough.
    • Prior exposure to lung irradiation or other chemotherapies may cause pulmonary changes.
  4. Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  5. Skin rashes and itching
    • May be common
    • Report any rash, skin changes to your nurse or doctor
  6. Chills and fever
    • Report shaking chills or fever greater than 100.5
