Chemotherapy Education
Methotrexate
- Usually given intravenously, can be given orally
- Frequently given with other chemotherapy drugs
- Some of the side effects may include:
- Mouth sores (stomatitis)
- May start 5-10 days after administration.
- Notify doctor or nurse if severe or persisting.
- Bone marrow suppression
- Your red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelet counts will all drop after methotrexate, reaching their lowest point at about 1-2 weeks.
- All counts will recover by themselves. No specific diet or activity will hasten this.
- Nausea and vomiting
- Slight nausea common
- Vomiting unusual
- Diarrhea (rare)
If you are receiving High Dose Methotrexate, there will be extra precautions to take. You will also receive a second drug called leucovorin; it will be essential that you take this as directed after the Methotrexate.
