Iressa (Gefitinib)

• Indicated for the treatment of patients with locally advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer.
• Disrupts protein signaling between cancer cells which leads to cancer cell death and inhibition of tumor growth.
• Given orally. Can be taken with or without food.
• Some of the side effects may include:

• Increased risk of bleeding
  • Call if having frequent nose bleeds, blood in sputum, or stools.
• Rash
  • Call if painful or itchy.
• Diarrhea
  • If this occurs, use Immodium AD (over the counter) as directed on the package.
  • Call if you have more than 5 diarrhea stools per day, abdominal cramping or pain with bowel movements, or any night-time diarrhea.
• Loss of appetite/changes in taste
  • Experiment with different foods. See “Eating Hints” booklet.
• Mild Nausea
  • You will be given anti-nausea medication to take as needed.
  • Call if you have any vomiting or if the nausea interferes with your ability to eat or drink.
• Fatigue
  • Good nutrition, plenty of rest, drinking at least 8 glasses of water per day will help.
  • Moderate exercise (walking 10 minutes at a time 3 times per day) may also help.
• Eye irritation
  • Call if eyes are painful or if you develop any eye discharge.
