Emend
(Aprepitant )
Used to prevent chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting.
It is very important to take Emend exactly as prescribed!
Generally prescribed as a “Tripack” (3 pills in one pack)
Side effects are generally mild, but may include:
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Insomnia (difficulty sleeping)
- Constipation
- Hiccups
- Loss of appetite
Directions for Emend:
- Take one 125mg tablet one hour prior to scheduled chemotherapy. Bring the tablet with you the day of chemotherapy. Tell your nurse that you are taking Emend, and she will let you know when it is all right to take it. She will check your blood counts first.
- Take one 80mg tablet each morning for the 2 days following your chemotherapy. It is important that you take these tablets even if you do not feel nauseated (sick).
- You will also be given a prescription for Decadron (an oral steroid). Take the Decadron with breakfast for 2 days following your chemotherapy. It is important to take this with food (after breakfast is best) even if you do not feel nauseated.
- You may also take any other anti-nausea medication that we have prescribed for you as needed.
- Report any vomiting or nausea that interferes with your ability to tolerate food or fluid.
