Cytarabine
(Cytosar, Ara-C)

• Given intravenously.
• Frequently given with other chemotherapy drugs.
• Some of the side effects include:

1. Nausea/Vomiting May begin soon after administration and last several hours.
   • You will be given anti-nausea medications prior to treatment, and you will receive prescriptions for home.
   • Myelosuppression/Bone Marrow Suppression
2. Your red blood cell (RBC), white blood cell (WBC), and platelet counts will all drop after Cytarabine, reaching their lowest point (nadir) in about 2 weeks.
   • This makes you more prone to anemia, infection, and bleeding.
   • All counts will recover by themselves. No specific diet or activity will hasten this.
   • Blood counts will be checked at least once each week and more frequently if ordered by your physician.
3. Decreased appetite.
4. Stomatitis (sores in the mouth that extend down the throat).
   • Will heal by themselves.
   • You may need medication for relief of temporary discomfort.
5. Fatigue
   • Common with most chemotherapy.
   • Usually lasts throughout the entire treatment time period.
   • Light to moderate activity can help alleviate some fatigue along with a well-balanced diet.
6. Diarrhea.
7. Headaches.
8. Dry eyes.
