Coumadin
(Warfarin Sodium)
- Coumadin is used to prevent blood clots. It lowers the body’s ability to make blood clots.
- Coumadin belongs to a specific category of drugs that requires frequent blood tests, monitoring, and dosage adjustments.
- Some of the side effects or things to watch out for include:
1. Fever, vomiting, diarrhea, infection, pain, swelling, discomfort,or other unusual symptoms.
2. Prolonged bleeding from cuts or nosebleeds; unusual bleeding from gums when brushing teeth; increased menstrual flow or vaginal bleeding.
3. Red or dark brown urine or stools.
4. Unusual bruising for unknown reasons.
- You should not take aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (Ibuprofen, Motrin, Alleve, etc…) while on Coumadin.
- There are many drug and food interactions. Check with your pharmacist or nurse.
