Chemotherapy Education

Camptosar
(irinotecan, CPT-11)

  • Given Intravenously over 90 minutes
  • Usually given 4 out of 6 weeks, then repeated
  • Some of the side effects may include:
  1. Nausea / vomiting
    • You will be given anti-nausea medicine before the chemotherapy
    • Tell the nurse if you have nausea after you go home.
  2. Myelosuppression (bone marrow suppression)
    • The number of your white blood cells (WBC) will decrease making you more susceptible to infections.
    • Your platelet count may also decrease making you more susceptible to bleeding.
  3. Hair loss
    • More than half the people receiving Camptosar lose some or all of their hair.
    • Hair will grow back after chemo is stopped.
  4. Fatigue
    • Common with most chemotherapy.
    • Usually lasts throughout the entire treatment time period.
    • Moderate exercise, good nutrition, and rest may help remedy this.
  5. Diarrhea
    • Have Immodium A-D on hand before you start therapy.
    • Tell the nurse if you develop cramping or diarrhea during treatment.
    • For cramping or diarrhea that starts after treatment, follow the diarrhea control plan.
