AVASTIN
(Bevacizumab)

• Given intravenously for treatment of colon or rectal cancer. Generally given over 90 minutes the first infusion, 60 minutes the second infusion, then over 30 minutes for all other infusions (to reduce risk of allergic reaction).
  
• Attacks the blood vessels that surround the tumor (thus stopping the nutritional supply to the tumor). Without nutrition, the tumor “starves”.
  
• Some of the common side effects may include:

1. Nosebleeds
   • Generally mild and stop with pressure.
2. High Blood Pressure
   • Will be monitored closely. You may require medication for this while you are receiving the Avastin.
   • Generally resolves when Avastin is stopped.
3. Protein in the Urine
   • May be a sign of kidney damage.
   • We will monitor this closely (generally a urine sample monthly).
4. Weakness/Fatigue
   • Resolves after completion of chemotherapy.
   • Good nutrition, adequate hydration, periods of activity and good rest will help alleviate this symptom.
5. Diarrhea
   • Generally due to combination of Avastin with chemotherapy.
   • May use Immodium AD to control this symptom.
   • Call the office if diarrhea is not controlled, or if you develop abdominal pain or cramping.
6. Delayed Wound Healing
   • Report any wounds or sores that do not heal.
   • You should not undergo any routine surgery or dental work within 28 days of receiving Avastin.
7. Gastrointestinal Perforation (a hole in the wall of the intestine)
   • Very small risk.
   • Report any new abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, or bloody stools.
8. Blood clots
   • Report any swelling of arms, legs, neck or shoulders
   • Report shortness of breath, cough, chest pain
